Author of "Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election, and Why They'll Steal the Next One Too Unless We Stop Them"
Mark Crispin Miller is the author of "None Dare Call It Stolen: Ohio, the Election, and America's Servile Press," published in the August 2005 issue of Harper's Magazine. He has a newly released book, Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election, and Why They'll Steal the Next One Too Unless We Stop Them. In his newly released book Fooled Again renowned media critic Mark Crispin Miller argues that it wasn't "moral values" that swung the 2004 presidential race; it was theft. While the greatest body of evidence comes from the key state of Ohio-where the Democratic staff of the House Judiciary Committee found an extraordinary amount of vote suppression, election-day irregularities, old-fashioned intimidation tactics, and illegal counting procedures-similar practices (and occasionally worse ones) were applied throughout the country. A huge array of anomalies, improper practices, and blatant violations of the law in state after state all, by a truly remarkable coincidence, happened to swing the vote in the incumbent ticket's favor. Though these were frequently reported in the local press, the national media, with their supposed "liberal bias," either ridiculed the idea that improprieties might have affected the results, or stayed silent.
Fooled Again presents massive documentation that the election was stolen and describes the mind-set, among both the major parties and the media, which could permit it to happen. Though all Americans want to believe in our democracy, Miller shows how more of the same is being prepared for 2006 and 2008. Our electoral system is deeply flawed - and it is something that every patriotic American should be concerned about. As Miller says, "This democracy can survive a plot to hijack an election. What it cannot survive is our indifference to, or unawareness of, the evidence that such a plot has succeeded." We cannot allow ourselves to be fooled again. Otherwise, we won't have a democracy to believe in.
